Police Called After Students Said the Square Root Symbol Looked Like a Gun

23 February, 2018

Police in Oberlin, Louisiana were called after some high school students thought the mathematical symbol for square root looked like a gun.

The symbol apparently led to a discussion among students, which led to a comment, which lead to a misunderstanding, which led to a police call.

Because of the square root symbol.

From the Miami Herald:

A discussion among students at Oberlin High School in Oberlin, La., about a mathematical symbol led to a police investigation and a search of one of the student’s homes, according to the Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office.

On the afternoon of Feb. 20, detectives investigated a report of terroristic threats at the school, where they learned that a student had been completing a math problem that required drawing the square-root sign.

Students in the group began commenting that the symbol, which represents a number that when multiplied by itself equals another number, looked like a gun.

After several students made comments along those lines, another student said something the sheriff’s office said could have sounded like a threat out of context.

The report added that "Police searched the student’s home, where they found no guns or any evidence that he had any access to guns. Authorities also wrote there was no evidence the student had any intent to commit harm."

Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert told PJ Media, however, that all his deputies did was knock on the kid's door.

"The whole notion that there was a SWAT raid over a math symbol is absurd," Hebert told PJM. "I got a call from a KPLC that they had a serious threat of a shooting at the school, so we went to the house to verify. There was no search warrant, we just sent two [deputies] to knock on the door. This is a small parish and everybody knows everybody and we found out very quickly there was no crime and no threat."

According to PJ Media, however, the student in question could end up facing disciplinary action by the school itself, up to and including expulsion.

Just…..oh Lord, help us.

Meanwhile, in Antarctica

More precise measurements show West Antarctica ice melt accelerating

The researchers noted that several parts of western Antarctica are experiencing acceleration of ice loss, rather than the consistent ice loss seen on the eastern parts of Antarctica. In practical terms, this means that each year, less ice that melts in the summer is replaced by winter snows, leaving less ice in total—and the pace of this process is speeding up. They note also that this is particularly alarming because prior research has shown that much of the ice in the western part of Antarctica is unstable, which means that large swaths could slip into the sea, causing a dramatic and relatively speedy rise in worldwide ocean levels. If the whole western ice sheet goes, they further note, the world could see ocean levels rise as much as three meters.

Some of the areas identified in the new images are the same parts of western Antarctica that have made headlines in recent years as major calving events have occurred, highlighting changes taking place. An increase in calving, the researchers note, can be problematic, placing large regions of ice at increasing risk of melting.

Warmed, Wet and Blocked: Another Storm Taking Aim at the Flooded Central U.S. is Expected to Transition into a Stalled Nor’Easter

27 February, 2018

The Ohio River Valley is now reeling from the worst flooding event of the past 20 years. Yet one more major event fueled by disruptions to the Earth’s atmosphere facilitated by human-caused climate change. But with another serious plume of moisture issuing from the warmer than normal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, more heavy rains are heading toward a storm-battered Central U.S.

(One more big moisture plume arises from a warmer than normal Gulf of Mexico. It will help to fuel a major storm system that is expected to impact a large swath of the U.S. for most of this week. Image source: Earth Nullschool.)

The set-up is similar to previous events of the past two weeks. A strong high pressure system over the Northeast is pulling a heavy load of moisture from a much warmer than normal Gulf of Mexico. Sea surface temperatures there, according to Earth Nullschool reanalysis, range from less than 1 C warmer than normal in the southern Gulf to as much as 5 C warmer than normal in the northern Gulf. Last week, these warmer than normal sea surfaces helped to fuel record atmospheric moisture levels along with historically heavy rains.

This week’s atmospheric moisture pulse will be picked up by a trough sweeping into the Central U.S. over the next couple of days. There, it will help to pump up a series of heavy storms that are predicted to dump another 3-7 inches of rain over the Mississippi River Valley this week. Note that this is on top of the 5-15 inches of rain that has already been dumped over the region during the last two weeks.

(NOAA composite radar imagery shows observed precipitation totals for the U.S. during the past 14 days. Note that another batch of heavy rains is headed directly for the region that has already been hit the hardest.)

Persistent extreme weather patterns of this kind are an aspect of human-forced climate change in that polar warming can result in Jet Stream blocking patterns that cause weather systems to stick around or repeat for long periods of time. This is particularly the case with the storm system now developing in the Central U.S. For as the storm strengthens and moves slowly eastward, it is expected to deepen into a powerful coastal low. This low is predicted to then rake the Northeast U.S. coast with 60 mph winds, heavy rain, high surf and coastal flooding.

As the storm’s eastward passage is blocked by the same weather system that so recently warmed the far north to such extreme winter temperatures, it is expected to linger off the U.S. East Coast even as it intensifies. Due to this predicted stall, the Northeast U.S. is facing the potential of multiple storm tides in which wind-driven water piles up — exacerbating coastal flooding.

(Very strong northeasterly winds are expected to rake the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts by March 2 according to GFS model forecasts. Image source: Earth Nullschool.)

Though the shape of the present storm is still a bit unclear, it is likely to both further exacerbate already severe flooding over the Central U.S. even as it generates some serious coastal flooding potentials for the Northeast by the end of this week. What is also clear is that a warming polar environment is contributing to these upstream severe weather events by increasing their persistence even as warming ocean surfaces are helping to feed them with larger moisture loads which generates higher potential storm and rainfall intensity.

You Tube backs down after threats to Alex Jones' InfoWars

YouTube Backs Down After Putting InfoWars On Verge Of Deactivation

27 February, 2018

YouTube issued a second strike to Alex Jones's main channel early Tuesday over a pair of videos related to the Florida school shooting - bringing it perilously close to termination, and loss of one of its main revenue streams, however the second strike was removed hours later for unknown reasons.

The offending videos, "The Truth About Crisis Actors In The Florida Shooting," and "What Is To Blame For The Florida High School Shooting" have been removed from YouTube, but can be seen here on the Infowars website.

While a second strike restricts a channel from posting new content for two weeks, a third strike can result in a ban from the platform.

"This is the second strike applied to your account within three months," the notice reads. "As a result, you're unable to post new content to YouTube for two weeks. If there are no further issues, the ability to upload will be automatically restored after this two week period."

Infowars has referred to the YouTube strikes as a "CNN lobbying campaign," after CNN reported that they had “identified three similar YouTube videos from InfoWars” which they flagged to YouTube. A YouTube spokesperson responded at the time that those videos were under review.

The Alex Jones Channel, which has over 2.2 million subscribers, first came under fire over a video suggesting that a survivor of the Parkland school shooting, David Hogg, was coached and given lines for interviews with various media outlets following the Valentines Day massacre which left 17 dead.

The video was removed for a violation of YouTube's "harassment and bullying" policy and the channel was issued a strike.

The video featured a clip of Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg appearing to flub scripted lines - leading many to believe he has been coached on what to say as he tours around the country to promote an aggressive gun control agenda:

David Hogg can't remember his lines here.
This needs to be investigated
His dad worked for the FBI
pic.twitter.com/JEhDc2puoQ

YouTube has all but scrubbed this clip of Hogg from its platform.

Earlier in the day, David Hogg shot off a barrage of tweets making fun of Alex Jones - which started off with Hogg telling Jones he wanted to [sic] "come on and clear some of this up because clearly as a shit journalist you can't clearly"

The fact that the witnesses and victims of this have been called actors is a perfect example of the lack of maturity and basic human empathy in this country and in many adults like @DonaldJTrumpJr
Wait 🤔didn't you get sued for pedaling lies about the survivors and victims of another school shooting? Clearly someone didn't learn from their mistakes

I might not be great with spelling or punctuation but unlike Jones do my research and don't sell snake oil to the masses.

Jones accepted Hogg's offer to have him on the show

David, you are welcome to come on the show.

Are you aware that CNN is using you as part of a lobbying campaign to shut down Infowars?

You are now a public figure & activist. You are not immune to criticism.

We know your views on the 2nd amendment. Do you support the 1st? https://twitter.com/davidhogg111/status/968504532819988483

Three hours later, Hogg backpedaled, tweeting "I will not speak to anyone that has had disgusting remarks to victims of mass shootings in the past."

I will not speak to anyone that has had disgusting remarks to victims of mass shootings in the past. I sent that tweet without realizing just how awful so many people have been to victims and witnesses of these events in the past.

Jones replied:

David Hogg challenged me to a debate by bullying and viciously attacking me. After I politely accepted, he backed out when his real goal of baiting me failed. Only fears investigation https://twitter.com/davidhogg111/status/968562072043835392
