reacted with exasperation and bewilderment. After the Supreme Court
ruling, European Parliament Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt said:
"I never want to hear Boris Johnson or any other Brexiteer say
again that the European Union is undemocratic." Another senior
official sent a rolling eyes emoji when asked for their reaction.

a poll that saw 16,413 take part, 86 percent of participants
expressed outrage at the ruling that threw Mr Johnson’s Brexit

domestic counter-intelligence service MI5 has been accused in High
Court of violating data collection and storage privileges by storing
private citizens’ information in bulk without proper protections.
MI5
has no control of its storage of vast volumes of people’s calls,
messages, web browsing history, as well as other personal data that
the agency has managed to obtain on the basis of surveillance
warrants, which were often issued under false pretext, the High Court
heard on Tuesday in a legal challenge brought by the human rights
organization Liberty.
Liberty
claims that the MI5 persistently violates privileges obtained by the
Investigatory Powers Act (IPA), which allows the security services to
hack individuals' computers and phones in the name of national
security. The agency’s failures have been identified by the head of
the Investigatory Powers Commissioner’s Office (IPCO), Sir Adrian
Fulford, who is tasked with safeguarding the storage and timely
deletion of bulk data. A series of 10 documents and letters from MI5
and IPCO have been shared with the court in support of the claims.
The
spy agency has been aware of breaches of compliance with the IPA for
at least three years but has “kept the failings secret,”
according to the evidence presented. The MI5 handling of people’s
data was found to be “undoubtedly unlawful” by Fulford, who
accused the intelligence service of “historical lack of compliance”
with IPA safeguards.
Furthermore,
the spying apparatus is being accused of misleading the judges when
applying for surveillance warrants under false assurance that proper
storage of the data will be met. Hacking warrants would have never
been issued if breaches were known, Fulford pointed out.
“MI5
have been holding on to people's data - ordinary people's data, your
data, my data - illegally for many years,” Megan Goulding, a lawyer
for Liberty, said. “Not only that, they've been trying to keep
their really serious errors secret - secret from the security
services watchdog, who's supposed to know about them, secret from the
Home Office, secret from the prime minister and secret from the
public.”
According
to Yair Cohen, a social media lawyer and the author of the book ‘The
Net is Closing: Birth of the e-police’, the issue here is not
necessarily the collection of the data but the way it has been
unlawfully stored.
“The
storage of the data exceeded the time it was allowed to be stored,
which means that the whole exercise can be rendered unlawful,”
Cohen told RT. Failure to erase bulk data once it is no longer needed
could “endanger people whose data MI5 possessed,” he claimed.
“This
type of data has been kept in an insecure manner. It means that it
was perhaps open for hundreds of people to view it...maybe there
would have been leaks of the data to all sort of organizations that
shouldn't really be accessing the data for national security
reasons,” Cohen explained.

Islamist
Chechen fighters who honed their combat skills at Islamic State (IS,
formerly ISIS) training camps are at war against Ukrainian rebels,
confirms the Times. Tumbleweed.
The report in
British newspaper the Times, that Chechen Islamists, many reeling
from defeat in Syria and Iraq amongst the alphabet soup of
fanaticism, had indeed arrived at the war front in eastern Ukraine,
woke me up from any Christmas torpor.
An
earlier report in
the New York Times had revealed that the Islamist Chechens were under
the command of the fascist “Right Sector” and were there to
“fight
Russians”
because “we
like fighting Russians”
and “will
never stop fighting Russians.”
While
the report was a wake-up call for me, not so the rest of the British
media still less the British political class. Tumbleweed rolled over
the media spaces where fear and loathing should have been. There was
more interest in Strictly Come Dancing than the long bearded Islamist
extremists, who were now, once again, our dancing partners in crime.
But
it was always thus.
When
I returned to the House of Commons in 2012 after a brief absence, I
asked the then Prime Minister David Cameron if he had read Mary
Shelley’s Frankenstein. And if so, if he had read it all the way to
the end. The end in which the monster, the good doctor had so
carelessly created, broke free from his control and began acting
like, well, a monster.
On
another occasion I was trapped in a lift briefly with the then
Foreign Secretary William (now Lord) Hague. I told him: “William,
you’ve been wrong before, in fact you’ve been wrong all your
life. But you’ve never been insane before. This policy of putting
knives in the hands of Islamist fanatics and allowing them to go to
Syria is not just wrong, it’s insane.”
And
one day, I added portentously: “Such
men with such knives will be in this building and looking for you,
looking for me.”
Which came true just three years later.
My
powers of prediction in parliament go back much further however.
On
the eve of the fall of Kabul to the Islamist hordes nearly 30 years
ago I told the former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher: “You
have opened the gates to the barbarians, and a long dark night will
now descend upon the people of Afghanistan.”
It
was certainly not the worst prediction I have ever made.
The
policy of “my
enemy’s enemy is my friend”
is a deeply immoral one, and one which has repeatedly failed yet is
repeatedly repeated.
In
the mid-1990s I gave a lecture to the International Department of the
Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party about knowledge I
had acquired through working with the Saudi opposition in London that
someone called Osama Bin Laden had been oriented by the United States
towards the Xinjiang region in China to agitate amongst the Uighur
Muslim minority there, to exacerbate their alienation from the state,
to take advantage of the weaknesses of Chinese State policy towards
their Muslim citizens. And to sow terror.
So
novel was the name Osama Bin Laden then that the International
Department cadres crowded round me at the end asking me to spell his
name for them. So important was my news that a week later I had to do
it again for the deputy foreign minister of China.
Back
in 2015, the New York Times was at pains to point out that the
fanatics who turned up at Mariupol were “unpaid
volunteers”
and that neither they nor their Right Sector commanders were paid or
instructed by the United States special forces there nor for that
matter by US officials. But that’s what they always say.
The
US backs “moderate”
fanatics only, just like in Syria. If you believe that, I have a
bridge here in London I can sell you, going cheap.
These
groups are open disciples of the anti-Semitic pogromists who fell
upon their Jewish neighbours and murdered them during the Nazi
Occupation of Ukraine. There was no need to wait for the trains or
the concentration camps. And yet, they became instruments of policy
for “liberal”
“democracies”.
An
axis of evil formed between them and the head-chopping, heart-eating,
crucifying killers of Islamist extremism must mark a new low in
Western policy. And the worst possible Christmas present for the
Christians of eastern Ukraine.

The
only words that were left out of Theresa May’s announcement of
achieving Cabinet approval over her Brexit deal were Mission
Accomplished.
Theresa
May was put in charge of the U.K. to betray Brexit from the
beginning. She always represented the interests of the European
Union and those in British Parliament that backed remaining in the
EU.
No
one in British ‘high society’ wanted Brexit to pass. No. One.
No
one in Europe’s power elite wanted Brexit to pass. No. One.
No
one in the U.S.’s power elite wanted Brexit to pass. No. One.
When
it did pass The Davos Crowd began the process of sabotaging it. The
fear mongering has done nothing but intensify. And May has done
nothing but waffle back and forth, walking the political tight rope
to remain in power while trying to sell EU slavery to the both sides
in British Parliament.
We’re
29 months later and the U.K. is no closer to being out of the EU than
the day of the vote. Why?
Because
Theresa May’s 585 page ‘deal’ is the worst of all possible
outcomes. If it passes it will leave the EU with near full control
over British trade and tax policy while the British people and
government have no say or vote in the matter.
It’s
punishment for the people getting uppity about their future and
wanting something different than what had been planned for them.
Mr.
Juncker and his replacement will never have to suffer another one of
Nigel Farage’s vicious farragoes detailing their venality ever
again. YouTube will get a whole lot less interesting.
It’s
almost like this whole charade was designed this way.
Because
it was.
May
has tried to run out the clock and scare everyone into accepting a
deal that is worse than the situation pre-Brexit because somehow a
terrible deal is better than no deal. But, that’s the opposite of
the truth.
And
she knows it. She’s always known it but she’s gone into these
negotiations like the fragile wisp of a thing she truly is.
There’s
a reason I call her “The Gypsum Lady.” She’s simply the
opposite of Margaret Thatcher who always knew what the EU was about
and fought to her last political breath to avoid the trap the U.K. is
now caught in.
The
U.K. has had all of the leverage in Brexit talks but May has gone out
of her way to not use any of it while the feckless and evil vampires
in Europe purposefully complicate issues which are the height of
irrelevancy.
She
has caved on every issue to the point of further eroding what’s
left of British sovereignty. This deal leaves the U.K. at the mercy
of Latvia or Greece in negotiating any trade agreement with Canada.
Because for a deal between member states to be approved, all members
have to approve of it.
So,
yeah, great job Mrs. May. Mission Accomplished. They are popping
champagne corks in Brussels now.
But,
this is a Brexit people can be proud of.
Orwell
would be proud of Theresa May for this one.
You
people are leaving. Let the EU worry about controlling their
borders. And if Ireland doesn’t like the diktats coming from
Brussels than they can decide for themselves if staying in the EU is
worth the trouble.
The
entire Irish border issue is simply not May’s problem to solve.
Neither is the customs union or any of the other stuff. These are
the EU’s problems. They are the ones who don’t want the Brits
to leave.
Let
them figure out how they are going to trade with the U.K. It is so
obvious that this entire Brexit ‘negotiation’ is about protecting
the European project as a proxy for the right of German automakers to
export their cars at advantageous exchange rates to the U.K. at
everyone’s expense.
Same
as it was in the days of The Iron Lady.
If
all of this wasn’t so predictable it would be comical.
Because
the only people more useless than Theresa May are the Tories who care
only about keeping their current level of the perks of office.
The
biggest takeaway from this Brexit fiasco is that even more people
will check out of the political system. They will see it even more
clearly for what it is, an irredeemable miasma of pelf and privilege
that has zero interest in protecting the rights of its citizens or
the value of their labor.
It
doesn’t matter if it’s voter fraud in the U.S. or a drawn out
betrayal of a binding referendum. There comes a point where those not
at the political fringes look behind the veil and realize changing
the nameplate above the door doesn’t change the policy.
And
once they realize that confidence fails and systems collapse.
Brexit
was the last gasp of a dying empire to assert its national relevancy.
Even if this deal is rejected by parliament the process has sown
deep divisions which will lead to the next trap and the next and the
next and the next.
By
then Theresa May will be a distant memory, being properly rewarded by
her masters for a job very well done.
