Barren
Island volcano in Andaman Islands of India activated again. 20,000 ft
(6km) high ash plume drifting 120 nautical miles to the south-west
was reported last night by VAAC Darwin, February 17, 2013. Aviation
color has been changed to Red. Previously, volcanic activity was
registered in September 2010 and had continued through January 2011.
Located
in Andaman sea, 354-m high Barren Island is 135 km NE of Port Blair
(The Andaman Islands). The barren island volcano, a strato-volcano,
rises from depth of 2250m. The small, uninhabited 3-km-wide island
contains a roughly 2-km-wide caldera with walls 250-350 m high.
The
caldera, which is open to the sea on the west, was created during a
major explosive eruption in the late Pleistocene that produced
pyroclastic-flow and -surge deposits. The morphology of a fresh
pyroclastic cone that was constructed in the center of the caldera
has varied during the course of historical eruptions. Lava flows fill
much of the caldera floor and have reached the sea along the western
coast during historical eruptions.

6.1 quake strikes off New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands

WELLINGTON—A
6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands
early Tuesday, the US Geological Survey reported.
The
quake hit at 12:19 am (1219 GMT Monday) at a depth of 34 km (21
miles), about 161 km south of Raoul Island in the Kermadecs.
The
largely uninhabited islands are northeast of New Zealand’s North
Island.
A
magnitude 6.0 quake struck off North Island Saturday.
A
shallow 6.3-magnitude quake devastated the New Zealand city of
Christchurch in the South Island in February last year, leaving 185
people dead.
The
country sits on the so-called “Ring of Fire”, the boundary of the
Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, and experiences up to 15,000
tremors a year.
Tremor
strikes Elsinore fault
A
magnitude 3.4 earthquake broke 17 miles east-southeast of Julian at
9:04 a.m. Sunday, producing brief, light shaking felt across much of
San Diego County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The
quake happened 3.1 miles deep, at a point just east of the Elsinore
fault, one of the most active and potentially dangerous systems in
the state.
The
southern leg of the fault produced a quake measuring at least 7.0 in
1892. Sunday’s event was felt in Alpine, Campo, La Mesa, Julian,
Poway, Ramona, San Marcos, Borrego Springs, Pine Valley, San Diego
and Solana Beach.
A
Sheriff’s Department representative said there were no reports of
damage or injuries. It’s possible that Sunday’s quake was an
aftershock to the 7.2 Easter Sunday quake of April 2010. –UTSD
