What is wrong with President John Magufuli? Many people in and outside Tanzania are asking this question.
Magufuli claimed last year that God had eliminated Covid in the east African country of 60 million people, and has since made dismissing Covid vaccines his central priority – leaving many people asking: why?
In politics, there are generally two ways of making decisions. The first is evidence-based, weighing the pros and cons and choosing the best option; the greatest good for the greatest number.
The other is a populist approach, hell-bent against facts, science and logic. In a global pandemic where more than 2 million people have died, that is catastrophic.
The Tanzanian president seems to be taking populism to a whole new level.
Maybe he is under the influence of the same rabid anti-lockdown social media messaging that has persuaded some of my family and friends that Bill Gates or 5G have created the virus. But regardless of Magufuli’s cavalier motivation, these stances are a danger to public health. People are being exposed to suffering, and in some cases death.
Although the virus’s effect on Africa – including the numbers hospitalised or being tested – has not been quantified, the grim facts are crystal clear from within Magufuli’s own circle.....
....You really have to wonder, just what is wrong with Magufuli? In his crusade as an anti-vaxxer president, he has gone from repeatedly playing down the virus and mocking World Health Organization guidance to falsely claiming that Tanzania is Covid-free, and now to outrightly attacking his people for being vaccinated, fuelling denialism and conspiracies.
For a continent already battered by health and social issues, including hunger, malaria, displacement, unemployment, violence and insecurity, Magufuli’s unconscionable stance should compel us all to act.
Magufuli, who won another five-year term amid fraud allegations in 2020, is still fuelling anti-vaxxers as the pandemic and its new variants continue to play out. He needs to be challenged openly and directly. To look on indifferently exposes millions of people in Tanzania and across Africa’s great lakes region – as well as communities across the world – to this deadly and devastating virus.

WASHINGTON — Microsoft founder Bill Gates wants to see a new global alert system, mass testing systems and a quick-responding international infectious disease force developed to respond quickly to future pandemics in the wake of COVID-19.
“We need to spot these outbreaks as soon as they happen anywhere in the world. And that requires a global alert system,” Gates said.
Gates said in a video presentation Feb. 1 that there needs to be faster international responses to future pandemic such as COVID-19.
“We can get ahead of infectious disease outbreaks,” said Gates, who is co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and top proponent of vaccines worldwide.
Gates said there are lessons to be learned from the coronavirus pandemic.
Those include new mass testing platforms and technology. Gates termed these “mega testing diagnostic platforms.” “They can be deployed quickly, cost very little and test 20% of the entire population every week,” Gates said in the video which was posted on social media.
The billionaire technologist also wants to see new international global alert system and international response force developed to respond quickly to outbreaks across the world.
Gates also touted monoclonal antibodies, mRNA vaccines as ways to battle COVID and future viruses and diseases.
Unlike traditional vaccines which inject weakened or inactive viruses or germs into patients, MRNA vaccines send genetic messages to cells to produce more proteins and immune response to viruses, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
Gates said MRNA vaccines will be quicker to develop and easier to store than traditional vaccines.
Monoclonal antibodies are proteins produced in laboratories that mimic the immune system’s ability to fight off harmful pathogens such as viruses, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. The FDA approved some lab-produced antibodies as coronavirus treatments in November.“
These manufactured antibodies grab onto the virus and disable it just like your immune systems and can reduce death rates by as much as 80%,” Gates said.Maryland state health officials are also promoting monoclonal antibody treatments for some COVID-19 patients.
“While the distribution of vaccines is a top priority, monoclonal antibody treatments are another tool that can help patients fight COVID-19. Monoclonal antibody treatments can reduce patients’ symptoms and help prevent hospital admissions,” said Acting MDH Secretary Dennis Schrader in a statement on Jan. 27. “I encourage patients who have been diagnosed recently with COVID-19 to talk to a physician and see if a monoclonal antibody treatment is appropriate for them.”
In Maryland, the lab-produced antibodies are available for seniors age 65 and as well as those with certain medical conditions.

The UN has just recently admitted that new cases of infantile paralysis or polio have resulted in Africa from an oral polio vaccine developed with strong support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It mirrors what happened in the USA in the 1950s. This is worth a closer look.

President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina has claimed that the World Health organisation, WHO, offered his country the sum of $20m as bribe to poison COVID-19 cure, according Tanzania Perspective.
The President went on to insist that the herbal remedy called ‘COVID Organics’ made from Artemisia can cure COVID-19 patients within ten days.
Also appearing on France 24 News, Rajoelina said that the only reason the rest of the world had refused to take the herbal cure seriously and with respect was that it came from Africa.
“I think the problem is that (the drink) comes from Africa and they can’t admit… that a country like Madagascar… has come up with this formula to save the world.
“If it wasn’t Madagascar, and if it was a European country that had actually discovered this remedy, would there be so much doubt? I don’t think so,” Rajoelina said.
“What is the problem with Covid-Organics, really? He asked. Wondering if it could be that this product comes from Africa,” he added.
The President also wondered if it was not alright for a country like Madagascar, which is the 63rd poorest country in the world, to have come up with something that can help save the world.
He noted that if it was not Madagascar, but an European country that had actually discovered the Covid organic, there would not be so much doubt.
Articles in two Tanzanian newspapers claim that Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina has accused the World Health Organization (WHO) of offering a $20 million bribe to poison a herbal tea remedy he hails as a COVID-19 cure. However, there is no evidence Rajoelina made such comments and a spokesman for the Madagascan presidency flatly denied the claims.
