137 earthquakes in Spain

Moderate earthquakes in the Pamplona region, Spain

21 March, 2013

Update 15:51 UTC : The Pamplona area has experienced 137 earthquakes since Monday 08:00 AM. The population gets more and more worried and asks the authorities whether stronger quakes would occur. Of course, they can’t answer as nobody knows what will be coming.

A Navarra seismologist has said that one of the possibilities (there are many other ones) is that the heavy rainfall from the last couple of weeks (in one month almost as much as an average year) may have greased the rock layers. This phenomenon is called Hydro-seismicity. But he says that also this is not conclusive.
The only thing we can say is that the whole area should be prepared for a stronger one. This is mainly fixing objects who eventually can fall. We also advise to have a quick look at : Be Earthquake Prepared
A moderate earthquake occurred approximately 10 km outside Pamplona, close to Ciriza and Ororbia. IGN Spain is reporting a Magnitude of 3.7 at a still unknown depth at the time of writing.
