Whanganui MP Chester Borrows in court on careless driving charge

National MP for Whanganui Chester Borrows has appeared in court after allegedly driving into TPP protesters.

Borrows, who is Parliament's deputy speaker and a former police officer, appeared before Judge Jim Large in the Whanganui District Court on Monday afternoon on a charge of careless driving causing injury.

The alleged offence happened on March 22, when he was driving a car at an anti-TPP protest on Whanganui's Liverpool St.

Two female protesters were injured after allegedly being hit by his vehicle.

The judge suppressed all matters relating to Monday's hearing.

At an earlier appearance, Borrows said he was confident of defending the charge and that he would not stand down from Parliament if convicted.

MPs must resign from Parliament if convicted of a crime with a maximum penalty of two or more years' jail time, but the charge Borrows faces has a maximum penalty of three months' jail or a $4500 fine.
