Iranian
President Hassan Rouhani rejected French President Emmanuel Macron’s
attempts to coordinate a phone call between him and US President
Donald Trump.
The
attempt to coordinate the call took place on the sidelines of the
United Nations General Assembly meeting held in New York last week.
Macron,
who for months sought to melt the ice between Washington and Tehran,
was keen to install a secure telephone line in a hotel room, where
Rouhani was staying.
Rouhani
and his aides were shocked by the offer made by the French president
on an unannounced visit last Tuesday night at their residence at the
Millennium Hilton Hotel.
Macron
was waiting with a small team of consultants outside Rouhani’s room
and communicating with him through his aides.
Rouhani
eventually refused to answer the call, while Trump was waiting on the
other phone line.
