A Dutch company is pushing on the Government to work quickly to get a 'silver bullet' for reducing methane from cows in New Zealand.

But Agriculture Minister Damien O'Connor and his ministry both say the product could technically be used now and have expressed some worry about it's effect on New Zealand's brand overseas.

Meanwhile, the Climate Change Minister has expressed excitement about the product.

The compound, known as 3NOP and developed by Dutch giant DSM, has been shown in multiple studies to reduce methane emissions of dairy cows by around 30 per cent, by blocking the production of methane in the first place.
