Parts of Manhattan have suffered a widespread blackout, which affected traffic lights, subway stations, businesses and tourist attractions all across Midtown and Upper West Side.
Over 30,000 households and businesses have been left without power in New York, according to utility company Con Edison which continues to respond to “extensive outages” from 5th Avenue to the Hudson River, and from the West 40s to 72nd Street.

ConEdison now showing new power outages down to 34th st, which is close to where Madison Square Garden is
When the city suddenly went dark many people were trapped inside stuck elevators across the city’s high-rises, with firefighters struggling to rescue all of them more than an hour after the incident.

Blackout in Upper West Side New York City near Lincoln center. My block and adjacent blocks are all out of power, fire trucks are on the scene
The iconic giant monitors at the Times Square also went pitch black.

Well this is something. Apparently there’s a blackout in midtown Manhattan. MSNBC is back on the air thanks to a backup generator, but most of 30 Rock is dark. Started feeling like I was in a post-apocalyptic movie as I made my way outside. (The streetlights are all out too)
The cause of the power cuts has yet to be determined but some reports suggested a transformer fire and explosion could have caused the blackout as several witnesses heard a loud bang before the area went dark.

: Blackout reported in many areas of Manhattan, New York. Subway stations and may high rise buildings are running on emergency backup power. Reports of an explosion are also coming in. Updates to follow.

The power went out during several of our broadcasts, luckily backup generator kicked in. But a good swath of Manhattan is without electricity.

Yeah. Today is the anniversary of the 1977 Blackout which resulted in much looting around the city. That was just 1 part of a crazy year in NYC. What are the chances that 42 years later, half of Manhattan goes out of power.

For what it's worth this is what Hal Turner is saying:

Electric power has blacked-out on Manhattan's upper west side, and five-hundred-megawatts of energy just STOPPED.   Numerous reports of no lights or air conditioning in the area of Lincoln Center (67th & Broadway) and farther north.  UPDATED:  This was NO ACCIDENT!
The full scope of the blackout is not yet known, but New Yorkers are NOT happy given the temperature in the city right now remains in the upper 80's.   Those tenement buildings will heat up very fast.
And with all the "diversity" living there, the smell will get raunchy fast, too.

UPDATE 7:21 PM EDT --
30 Rockefeller Plaza just has a power SURGE.
Radio City Music Hall has no electricity either.
The AMC Movie Theaters at Lincoln Square forced all movie-goers to evacuate.
Emergency lighting is activated inside the 59th Street subway station:
Con Edison is reporting an outage for 19,739 CUSTOMERS in Manhattan.   Bear in mind that a "customer" is not a one family home;  it could be a fifty story apartment building with five hundred families.
Now, a map from ConEd showing most (not all) of the outage)
Mass Transit riders exiting the trains at 66th St report no lighting AT ALL in that subway station. "People using cell phone flashlights to get out."

UPDATE 7:39 PM EDT --
Reports now coming in from the area of 33rd Street, that SMOKE is coming from Madison Square Garden

The official COVER STORY is now falling apart.  People are looking for the explosions and fires themselves and finding . . .  NOTHING:
NBC News: It appears at this point that the large-scale power outage impacting approximately 20,000 in midtown and parts of the upper west side in Manhattan was caused by a tranformer fire at 54th Street amd West End Avenue, a senior city official says.

Situation is fluid.
Rode the bike over to 54th & WEA.
No sign of any fire or any problem here or anywhere near here.
No firefighters or ConEd workers anywhere in sight.
