It normally seems that, no matter how warm it is outside, the sea is always freezing.

But that's not the case this summer - and we have the proof.

RNLI lifeguards at Crantock, Newquay, recorded a sea temperature that was higher than the air temperature - something that was no doubt replicated around our coastline.

Sea temperatures are heading towards and in some cases above record levels on the coast off Cornwall after weeks of hot, dry weather.

Earlier this year the sea was punishing us with temperatures well below average, with the Beast from the East still having an impact by the end of May.

But now our fortunes have been reversed and sea temperatures at our most popular beaches are well above average for the time of year - and heading for record 40-year highs.

In north Cornwall Bude has hit a record high of 19.4C, beating the average 16.4C by three full degrees and setting a new record above the previous 18.1C - and Crackington Haven is even hotter at 19.8c, close to the air temperature which currently feels around 21C.

Bedruthan is today recorded at 19.1C, above the usual average of 16.7C and the high end of the range where the record stood at 18.4C - according to surf-forecast.com.

Constantine is also at 19.1C, Crantock is 18.9C, Duckpool is 19C as is Fistral.

Widemouth Bay is another warm one at 19.6C.

Porthtowan is a comfortable 18.2C - three degrees above the lowest recorded temperature for the time of year and Watergate Bay is 19C.

On the south coast, at Poldhu Cove the temperature is a practically balmy 18.3C, well over the normal 16.9C and getting close to the top 18.7C record.

At Falmouth's Swanpool the temperature is 17.8C - a full degree warmer than usual and heading for the high end of the range which stands at 18.6C, according to surf-forecast.com.

Mounts Bay at Penzance is at 17.3C, above the normal 16.(C and well above the lowest 15.3C seen at this time of year.

Marazion has temperatures of 17.4C today, above its usual 16.9C and Newlyn is at 17.5C, the same as Porthcurno.

Portwrinkle is 17C and Whitsand about the same at 17.1C
