The atmosphere west of New Zealand is backed up with fronts, with our cast-offs moving away to the east. This image is the 6am infra-red satellite picture (it's too early for the sun to shine on the western side of the image!), with MetService fronts overlaid, along with the air mass. Warm is greeny yellow, cold is blue. The 'tongues' of warm air reaching south are evident, along with successive plumes of cold air surging northwards.

This, unfortunately, is New Zealand's lot for the next while. Successive fronts, some of which form lows on them, marking the switch from warm air to cold and then back again. A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for damaging wind gusts on Saturday for much of Victoria. Northerly winds will strengthen as a vigorous cold front approaches western Victoria Saturday afternoon, reaching central parts at night, the cold front is linked to an intense low (940-950hPa) well south of the continent over the Southern Ocean.

Prior to sunrise on Saturday wind gusts of 90-100 km/h will be localised in nature over the southwest and central parts of the State, affecting mostly elevated locations, but also locally about the Otways, southern side of the central ranges and the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas. Damaging wind gusts of 90-100 km/h are possible more broadly across southern and mountain areas from late morning through to late afternoon.

Wind gusts of 110-130 km/h are expected about the Alpine region from Saturday afternoon, persisting into the night before moderating early Sunday morning.
