Russia has said it will react "in proportion" to any US military actions against Syria on the pretense of preventing a chemical attack.

"We will react with dignity, in proportion to the real situation that may take place,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday during a press conference.

Lavrov added that he hoped the US would not use its intelligence assessments concerning the Syrian government's alleged intentions to further provoke the country.

"I expect that our partners in the region - American, European - will also have an open and comprehensible approach aimed at de-escalation through normalization of the humanitarian situation," he added.

Earlier in the day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov cautioned the US against any unilateral action in Syria.

He further added that Syrian army troops pose no threat to US forces, and that the US attacks on the Syrian armed forces are provocative in nature.

On Monday, US Press Secretary Sean Spicer claimed that the US had “identified potential preparations” for an attack “that would likely result in the mass murder of civilians, including innocent children.”

The Pentagon claims that it has seen activities linked with chemical weapons at Shayrat airfield in Homs province that was hit by American missiles in April.

Different foreign-backed terrorist groups have been wreaking havoc in Syria since 2011. Over the past few months, Syrian forces have made sweeping gains against Takfiri elements, who have lately increased their acts of violence across the country following a series of defeats on the ground.

Russia Warns the US They Will Defend Syria

Foreign Minister Lavrov has stated that Russia will respond in "Proportion" to any US strike on Syria. This is the real first step that we have seen that Russia will stand for President Assad in the face of any aggression by Western leaders. Also more evidence arises that nations are supporting the known terrorist groups in the region. Sweden has given new identities to its citizens that have fought for ISIS, and Arms have been found by the Syrian Military with Hebrew labels suggesting that Israel has backed al Qaeda.

(MNA) -- Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani made the remarks on Wednesday in reaction to the recent threats made by US against the Syrian government, accusing it of making “preparations for another chemical weapons attack” and noting that Syria would “pay a heavy price” if such an assault took place.

Shamkhani stressed the need for OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) investigation into the US claims, adding “if the US is truly sincere in the claims it makes, it must provide OPCW inspectors with all related information so that the claims can be verified with cooperation from the Syrian government.”

He reminded the US illegal invasion of Syrian territory by carrying out cruise missile strikes against Shayrat airfield on April 7 under the pretext of alleging Syrian government of conducting a gas attack on the town of Khan Shaykhun in Idlib Province on April 4, adding “following the incident, Iran and Russia made official requests for dispatch of an international fact-fining mission to Syria to investigate the US claims, but Washington blocked the measure to cover up the falsehood of those claims.”

Shamkhani further stressed that the military scene in Syria would soon make a change in the continuation of US one-sided aggression in the warn-torn country and its escape from consequences of its measures.
