Is Trump going to fire FBI director Comey

This is likely to be rumor - I refuse to use the term "false news" unless the intention is to deceive.

Is President Trump Ready to Fire FBI Director James Comey?

28 March, 2017

Rumors abound, that President Trump is ready to fire FBI Director James Comey; however, strategically and realistically could President Trump fire him right now? The answer is without direct evidence of wrong-doing, FBI Director Comey is probably safe, at least for the moment.

FBI Director Comey who has 6 more years on his 10-year FBI Director tenure may have actually saved his own skin by revealing to America and the House Intelligence Committee he was investigating whether there was collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians.

Absent clear evidence of wrong-doing, to fire Comey when he is known to be investigating President Trump would be too close an analogy to Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre.” The “Saturday Night Massacre” was when President Nixon fired independent special prosecutor Archibald Cox, and as a result accepted the resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus on October 20, 1973, during the Watergate scandal.

That was the death knell of Nixon’s presidency. Nixon firing the very people who were investigating him was a bridge too far for the American public. President Trump must avoid comparisons to Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre” at all costs.

So by telling America, he was investigating President Trump, Comey may have actually bought himself more time as FBI Director.

Does President Trump want to fire FBI Director Comey? The answer is probably yes. And, if solid evidence surfaces to show Comey has colluded to keep Obama administration surveillance of Trump under wraps, Comey could be gone sooner rather than later. Also, if Comey is shown to have lied to Congress or failed to fully cooperate with Congressional inquiries, that could also signal his early demise as FBI Director. However, without that clear-cut evidence of Comey’s treachery, he is probably safe for the moment.

Meanwhile, some conservative websites like USA Politics Today are enjoying the parlor game of “when will Comey get fired and who will replace him,” continue fantasizing about Comey’s imminent firing and someone like Representative Trey Gowdy (R-SC) replacing him. While it could theoretically happen, we don’t yet have enough public “evidence” for Comey to get an Apprentice-style “you’re fired,” from President Trump just yet. Stay tuned.
