Saudi Arabia and its Sunni allies cut ties with Iran

It is obvious that this is huge news that indicates an escalation of what is a regional war and indirectly makes a nuclear conflagration all the more possible. The right-wing Christian evangelists will be rejoicing.

I was surprised to find that discussion on this was totally absent on Facebook this morning. Are people in shock or on holiday?

Saudi Arabia to cut commercial ties, flights to Iran - Foreign Minister

Riyadh is planning to cut off all flights between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and will ban its citizens from traveling to the Islamic Republic, the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Reuters.

"We will also be cutting off all air traffic to and from Iran. We will be cutting off all commercial relations with Iran. And we will have a travel ban against people travelling to Iran," he said.

Al-Jubeir said, however, that Iranian pilgrims were still welcome to visit Saudi Arabia’s holy sites of Mecca and Medina.

"There is no escalation on the part of Saudi Arabia. Our moves are all reactive. It is the Iranians who went into Lebanon. It is the Iranians who sent their Qods Force and their Revolutionary Guards into Syria," he said demanding Tehran "act like a normal country" before any talks of restoring the severed diplomatic relations.

The minister added that Riyadh was right to execute leading Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. Al-Jubeir accused him of "agitating, organizing cells, providing them with weapons and money." Riyadh should be applauded for executions, not criticized, he said.

Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Civil Aviation has announced a halt to all flights to and from Iran.

"Based on the kingdom's announcement of the severing of diplomatic relations with Iran, the General Authority for Civil Aviation is halting all flights from and to Iran," the authority wrote on Twitter.

Earlier, al-Jubeir announced Riyadh was cutting diplomatic ties with Iran over the storming of the Saudi embassy in Tehran.

Angry Iranian protesters set ablaze the Saudi Embassy in Tehran on Saturday night during a rally to condemn Riyadh’s execution of Al-Nimr.

Nimr was among 47 prisoners beheaded or shot by firing squad across Saudi Arabia on Saturday – the largest number of individuals executed in the Gulf kingdom in a single day since 1980.

The Saudi consulate in the city of Mashhad in northwestern Iran was also attacked by protesters on Saturday, with police intervening after rocks and Molotov cocktails were thrown at the building.

Also on Monday, Bahrain and Sudan announced they were cutting off diplomatic relations with Iran following the storming of Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran, while the United Arab Emirates said it was reducing the number of Iranian diplomats in the country.

The protests over the execution of the Shiite cleric are still on going in Bahrain, Iran and Iraq. On Monday, Bahraini police deployed teargas and birdshot at a demonstration in the village of al-Daih, west of the capital, Manama.

The demonstrators chanted, "Down with the house of Saud!" while a group of masked men suddenly threw stones and petrol bombs at police.

Bahrain and Sudan have announced they are cutting off diplomatic relations with Iran following the storming of Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran, while the United Arab Emirates said it was reducing the number of Iranian diplomats in the country.
Bahrain authorities said they have demanded that Iranian diplomats leave the country within 48 hours.

The decision was announced by Bahraini Media Minister Isa al-Hamadi.

"Bahrain decided to break off diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and calls upon all members of the mission to leave the kingdom within 48 hours," Bahrain state news agency BNA said.

The Sudanese Foreign ministry also announced it is cutting diplomatic ties with Iran.

"In response to the barbaric attacks on the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad ... the government of Sudan announces the immediate severing of ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran," a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Angry Iranian protesters stormed and set ablaze the Saudi Embassy in Tehran on Saturday night during a rally to condemn Riyadh’s execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. Nimr was among 47 prisoners beheaded or shot by firing squad across Saudi Arabia on Saturday – the largest number of individuals executed in the Gulf kingdom in a single day since 1980.

Allies back Saudi Arabia in standoff with Iran

Bahrain, Sudan and UAE break or downgrade ties in protest against attack on Saudi embassy following executions.

Saudi Arabia's regional allies have stepped up diplomatic pressure on Iran, breaking or downgrading relations with the country following an attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran, which followed executions in the kingdom.

Bahrain announced on Monday that it was closing its embassy in Iran, and called upon Iranian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours.

Bahrain frequently accuses Iran of being behind protests among its majority Shia population.

Within hours of the announcement, Sudan also said it was cutting off diplomatic relations with Iran "in solidarity with Saudi Arabia".

For its part, the UAE said it was downgrading its ties with Iran, replacing its ambassador with an embassy officer-in-charge.

So too does Radio New Zealand follow the line of its headchopping friends and put the reponsibility on Iran.

Fall out after Saudi executions

A number of Saudi Arabia's allies have joined diplomatic action against Iran after the Saudi embassy in Tehran was attacked amid a row over the execution of a Shia Muslim cleric.
