It is concerning when East Siberian and Laptev Sea ocean temperatures are above freezing. Open water absorbs more heat. Maps via Malcolm Light show where the heaviest concentrations of methane hydrates are. The third map shows thicknesses. 500 meters is about 1500 feet thick. Methane expands 150 to 170 times larger than the original frozen piece of methane hydrate ice when thawed. 

The methane hydrates in the Arctic Ocean have been safely frozen for about 10,000 years. They are thawing now.

Thickness and subsea Methane Eruption centers. The black lines represent fractures. These are potential escape routes for mantle methane. The Gakkel Ridge is showing on the left. It runs right under the high concentrations of methane hydrates in the Laptev Sea.
