The above video, created by Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto, depicts the 2,053 nuclear explosions that have taken place worldwide from 1945 to 1998.

It’s often easy to slip into the illusion that the nuclear bomb has only been detonated twice, in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, because those were the only bombs detonated in war. But it’s all to easy to forget that the planet itself has been nuked over 2,000 times, and from the ecological perspective, that’s a very hard load to bear indeed. Especially when you consider the added damage from nuclear disasters like Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Fukushima, there has been FAR too much nuclear activity in the world in the last century (assuming ANY level of nuclear activity is acceptable).

Since Obama seems committed to nuclear power as the way out of the environmental crisis, and Fukushima shows no signs of slowing in dumping radiation into the sea, we may need to start getting used to our third eyes and extra limbs.
