Ron Paul Places Second In Washington Caucuses, Beats Santorum

4 March, 2012

With the final results tallied from the Washington State’s Saturday caucuses, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney held onto a strong lead, while Texas Representative Ron Paul narrowly edged out former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum for second place.

Romney finished the night with 37.6 percent of the vote, followed by 24.8 percent for Paul and 23.8 percent for Santorum, according to the Associated Press tally. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich trailed with 10.3 percent. Paul and Santorum were separated by just 505 votes.

A total of 50,764 votes were cast. That is around four times the number of votes cast in the Republican caucuses in 2008, but Washington had a different system that year, which included both a caucus and a primary.

The year’s caucus was non-binding, and the state’s 43 delegates will be chosen at county caucuses in late March and April and at a state convention that will be held May 30 to June 2.

The Washington caucuses were overshadowed by last week’s primaries in Michigan and Arizona, which Romney also won, and by the coming Super Tuesday contests in 10 states.
