Yellowstone volcano on "high" alert

USGS: Yellowstone Super Volcano Threat Set To "High"

30 October, 2018

The United States Geological Survey has increased the Yellowstone supervolcano threat to “high.” This is the first time that the USGS has updated its volcano threat assessments list since 2006.

The USGS said that 11 of the 18 volcanoes they have classified as a “high threat” or a “very high threat” are located in Washington, Oregon, or California, “where explosive and often snow- and ice-covered edifices can project hazards long distances to densely populated and highly developed areas.”

According to the
Epoch Times,
the danger list is topped by Kilauea in Hawaii, which has been erupting continuously in 2018.  Mount St. Helens as well as Mount Rainier in Washington, Alaska’s Redoubt Volcano, and California’s Mount Shasta are also in the top five, according to what the USGS has said.
Although the Yellowstone supervolcano is a “high” threat, it’s only the 21st most dangerous volcano in the United States.

According to Forbes, the assessment that Yellowstone supervolcano was only high was not assigned on a whim. While theYellowstone supervolcano does have the potential for a large eruption, other factors are at play. Such as the fact that it erupts so infrequently, shows no signs of increasing eruption risk today, and is located in a relatively sparsely populated area of the United States which decreases the threat. To be clear, the USGS still ranked the supervolcano as a “high” threat, but it is clearly not the most dangerous volcano in the United States.

Despite the recent gradual uptick in thermal activity in the caldera directly below the supervolcano, the new USGS threat assessment is showing Yellowstone as stable, but dangerous when it does happen to erupt in the future, according to a report by the Missoulan.

The Yellowstone supervolcano is one of the most feared volcanoes on the globe, however, scientists are constantly reminding everyone that the chance of it erupting in a violent and globally devastating fashion is rather small, even though it is said to be “past due” for such an explosion.

Earthquakes near Vancouver and Seattle

Near Miss! Three powerful major quakes: Mag, 6.8, 6.6 and a 6.5 strike west of Vancouver and Seattle no immediate tsunami warning

USGS

22 October, 2018

Three powerful earthquakes of magnitude 6.8, 6.6 and 6.5 have struck west of the Canadian province of British Columbia on Monday, the United States Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the major quakes, which hit at a depth of 33 km (21 miles) about 190 km (117 miles) southwest of Port Hardy, a town on the northeast end of Vancouver Island.

There was no immediate tsunami warning.

Solar wind flowing from a large coronal hole on our Sun could reach Earth's magnetic field on Oct. 24th and is known to influence quake activity here on our planet.

This morning's quakes bring the total to 12 major quakes this month and the 100th of 2018.

7.5 earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia

Magnitude 7.5 earthquake triggers tsunami in Indonesia
At least five people are dead and buildings have been swept away after a tsunami struck two centres on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

The tsunami was caused by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake which hit just off central Sulawesi last night.
The earthquake struck the cities of Donggala and Palu which are home to more than 600,000 people.

A tsunami warning was issued following the quake but was lifted within an hour.
A video on social media shows people screaming and running in fear as the wave sweeps through Palu.

Officials say at least five people are dead - but it is not clear yet if those were as a result of the tsunami.
The head of Indonesia's meterology and geophysics agency BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati said the tsunami had receded.
"The situation is chaotic, people are running on the streets and buildings collapsed. There is a ship washed ashore," she said.
Indonesian disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said houses were swept away by the tsunami and families had been reported missing.
He said communications with central Sulawesi were down, and the search and rescue effort was being hampered by darkness.
The area was hit by a lighter quake earlier in the day, which killed one person and injured at least 10 in Donggala, authorities said.
A tsunami in 2004, triggered by an earthquake off the island of Sumatra, killed more than 120,000 Indonesians and 226,000 people across the Indian Ocean.
Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies on the Ring of Fire - the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific rim.

More than half of the world's active volcanoes above sea level are part of the ring.

The agencies denounce Dutchsinse on Twitter

I am not a follower of Dutchsinse although perhaps I should be. I know of several friends who depend on him and are thankful for his warnings.

But we are all supposed to bow to Authority despite the fact they are perhaps the greatest fearmongers of them all and prove themselves to be wrong, time after time.

I do know anecdotally that Dutchsinse, as eccentric as his approach seems to be, has a better record at predicting these things.

Personally, I'd rather have the prediction and decide to get out of town for a while rather than be a sitting duck.

USGS publicly disparages the work of Dutchsinse

It's not as if the authorities ever sow panic, is it?
The last example was last week but I can't find it.

Scientists have warned a "megathrust" earthquake could release 2000 times more energy than the 2011 Christchurch earthquake that killed 185 people.

The risk comes from the Hikurangi subduction zone, a fault that runs along East Coast where the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates collide.

Scientists are discussing the risks it poses at a summit in Napier this week.

They say it could trigger a massive 8.4 magnitude quake, that would cripple the lower North Island.

And yet they can admonish others. Their word is good enough.

No room for doubt. It's all just a big lottery and everything is random. There are no patterns or connetions anywhere in the Universe. Lol.

There have been 11 significant earthquakes in the past week, mostly on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

But while the quake activity has been higher than normal, it's not an unusual pattern, an expert says.

The most recent of the quakes was about 10.30am on Wednesday (NZT) in Vanuatu. According to the US Geological Survey it was a magnitude 6.5 shake, centred at a depth of 13.4km.

About an hour earlier, there was a magnitude 7.3 quake at a depth of 123km, actually a bit outside the ring of fire in Venezuela.

"Basically, you can just think of it as random distribution," GNS Science seismology scientist Dr John Ristau said.

The Pacific Ring on Fire

Fiji earthquake: Pacific islands ROCKED by HUGE 7.8 magnitude earthquake
A HUGE earthquake has struck off the coast of Fiji. The powerful 7.8 magnitude tremor hit 66 miles east of the Fijian capital of Suva at 4.39pm BST (3.49am Friday local time).

The deep earthquake struck 377 miles under the surface, according to data from earthquake monitoring service the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Its depth meant only light shaking was felt on the surface.

A Twitter user who felt the quake said: “It was really strong, strong enough to wake me up at 3.50am in the morning!

No damage was done, all we felt 20 mins outside of Suva city was a slight swaying of the house with doors creaking. Still safe to travel.”

No tsunami warnings have been issued following the quake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: “Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat because the earthquake is located too deep inside the Earth.”

The earthquake was initially registered as an 8.1 magnitude by USGS but was later downgraded to a 7.8.

Fiji sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', a 25,000 mile-long area in which some 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes occur.

The belt runs from New Zealand, through South East Asia and Japan and along the entire western coastline of the Americas.

Today’s earthquake in Fiji follows an 8.2 magnitude tremor which struck off the Pacific island nation on August 19.

Just yesterday, Hokkaido in northern Japan was rocked by a 6.7 magnitude quake.

Ecuador Earthquake: Quito and Guayaquil hit by earth tremor in ring of fire
THREE major earthquakes have hit South America within just one hour, including a massive 6.3 magnitude tremor which hit Ecuador’s capital Quito.

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile whilst another at 5.5 strength occurred on the Columbia/Panama border.

The quakes have been confirmed by the USGA, who monitor earthquakes.

It’s epicentre was to the east of Guayaquil, the most populous city in the country.

Ecuador resident Nancy Miorelli tweeted: “My building wiggled sufficiently all the way north in Quito.”

Any earthquake over 6 is categorised as ’Strong’ on the Richter Scale, which measures earthquake strength.
The earthquake took place at a depth of 93 kilometres.
Over two million people live within 100 kilometres of the earthquake.
Ecuador borders the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ which is susceptible to earthquakes.

The ‘Ring of Fire’ is surrounded by oceanic trenches and volcanic arcs, making it highly susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Approximately 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes take place in the region.
It is not known if there have been any casualties.
Web developer Erick Alexander, who was in the county, commented: “Earthquake in Ecuador, was on the phone with my parents and little brother when it happened.
Protect them dear God.”
Another Twitter user reported: “Was on the phone with someone in Quito as it happened.
Tremors were felt first here in Cuenca but duration of tremors was longer in Quito.
No damage here.”
Cuenca is a city in Ecuador situated to the south of the capital Quito.

Shallow 6.6 quake on Hokkaido, Japan

Big earthquake hits Japan, sparking landslides
A powerful typhoon killed 10 people in Japan and an airport company transferred some 3000 stranded passengers by boats from a flooded airport, the Japanese government says.

Rescue squads from fire departments were combing many areas for survivors and further people who could be trapped following widespread massive landslides.

6 November, 2018

People are missing, buildings have collapsed, and roads have buckled amid widespread landslides sparked by a strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake that has struck the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The quake struck 27 kilometres east of Tomakomai at a depth of 33.4km at 3.07am (6.07am NZT). No tsunami warning was issued from the inland quake.

The shaking continued for at least 30 seconds, witnesses said. The quake was followed by three aftershocks, measuring up to magnitude 4.8.

At least 20 people were missing and 48 injured, Japan's national broadcaster NHK said.

There were reports of at least one person was found without vital signs, with people trapped in elevators, buildings and houses following the tremors.

Soil oversaturated by recent heavy rains had caused widespread landslips during the M6.6 quake, covering many houses and blocking roads.

Hundreds of rescuers from fire departments were combing many areas for survivors and further people who could be trapped.

Around 2.95 million households in regional capital Sapporo were without power.

Walls had collapsed at New Chitose airport - the country's fifth busiest for passengers - and all flights were cancelled. All Shinkansen bullet train services in the area were suspended, as were Sapporo subway services.

Shaking from the quake early Thursday morning measured an "upper 6" on the Japanese quake intensity scale of 7 in Abira in western Hokkaido.

That was the strongest shaking felt in Japan since powerful quakes struck Kumamoto, in southern Japan, in 2016.

There was no impact from the earthquake to Hokkaido Electric Power Co's Tomari nuclear plant, which has been offline since 2012, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

Many landslides sparked by the quake had covered houses and blocked roads.
NHK later reported that external power to the plant had been cut off, but emergency generators were working and there was no impact on the storage of the plant's nuclear fuel.

Two other nuclear power plants in northern Japan, Tohoku Electric Power Co's Higashi-dori, which is also offline, and the under-construction Oma plant, were also unaffected, NHK said.

Earlier in the week, a powerful typhoon struck western Japan around Osaka, killing at least 10 people.

Hundreds of people have been injured and at least two have died after a powerful 6.1 earthquake struck western Iran, near the border with Iraq.

The quake struck some 31 kilometers from Javanrud, Kermanshah province, at a depth of 10 kilometers, USGS reports. There were no immediate reports of major damage, but the powerful jolt was reportedly felt as far as the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

At least two people have died and another 241 people have been injured in the earthquake, the Emergency Department said, according to Fars news agency.

A number of people suffered injuries in the quake and were rushed to hospital in Javanrud, Press TV reports.
