Avoiding
climate chaos means 'unprecedented' change: UN report
The
UN's 195-nation climate science body plunged deep into overtime
Saturday to finalise a report outlining stark options—all requiring
a global makeover of unprecedented scale—for avoiding climate
chaos.
Working
through the night, the closed-door huddle in rain-soaked Incheon,
South Korea, was to convene a plenary later in the day to hammer
through a "Summary for Policymakers."
Can
humanity cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees
Fahrenheit)? What will it take and how much will it cost? Would
climate impacts be significantly less severe than in a 2C world?
The
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was tasked with
these questions by the framers of the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement,
which calls for halting the rise in temperatures to "well below"
2C—and 1.5C if possible.
That
aspirational goal—tacked on to the treaty at the last minute—caught
climate scientists off-guard.
"Our
understanding of 1.5C was very limited, all but two or three of the
models we had then were based on a 2C target," said Henri
Waisman, a senior researcher at the Institute for Sustainable
Development and International Relations in Paris, and one of the
report's 86 authors.
Based
on more than 6,000 peer-reviewed studies, the 20-page bombshell will
make for grim reading when it is released on Monday.
"Leaders
will have nowhere to hide once this report comes out," said
Jennifer Morgan, Executive Director of Greenpeace International, and
an observer at the talks.
'Negative
emissions'
At
current rates of greenhouse
gas emissions,
Earth will zoom past the 1.5C signpost around 2040, and as early as
2030.
After
only one degree of warming, the world has seen deadly storms engorged
by rising seas and a crescendo of heatwaves, drought, flooding and
wild fires made more intense by climate change.
Without
a radical course change, we are headed for an unliveable 3C or 4C
hike.
And
yet, humanity has avoided action for so long that any pathway to a
climate-safe world involves wrenching economic and social change
"unprecedented in terms of scale," the report said.
"Some
people say the 1.5C target is impossible," said Stephen
Cornelius, WWF-UK's chief adviser for climate
change,
and a former IPCC negotiator.
"But
the difference between possible and impossible is political
leadership."
The
report is set to lay out four scenarios that could result in Earth's
average surface temperature stabilising at 1.5C.
The
most ambitious—dubbed the "low energy scenario"—would
see a radical drawdown in energy consumption coupled with a rapid
shift away from fossil fuels and a swift decline in CO2 emissions
starting in 2020.
It
would not require a temporary "overshoot" of the 1.5C
threshold, and does not depend on sucking vast quantities of CO2 out
of the air, known as carbon dioxide removal, or "negative
emissions."
A
second pathway emphasises the need for changing our consumption
patterns—eating less meat, travelling less, giving up cars,
etc.—along with an overhaul of agricultural and land-use practices,
including the protection of forests.
Running
interference
The
final scenario compensates for a "business-as-usual"
economy and lifestyle by allowing a large overshoot of the 1.5C
target.
It
also calls for burning a lot of biofuels and capturing the emitted
CO2, a system known by its acronym, BECCS. Indeed, an area twice the
size of India would have to be planted in biofuel crops.
This
"P4" plan also assumes that some 1200 billion tonnes of
CO2—30 years' worth of emissions at current rate—will be socked
away underground.
Signficantly,
and for the first time, the UN panel quantified changes in the use of
coal, oil and gas.
For
the low-energy demand pathway, for example, coal consumption would
drop 78 percent by 2030, and 97 percent by mid-century. Oil would
decline by 37 and 74 percent, respectively, and gas by 25 and 74
percent.
The
pathway of least resistance, by contrast, would still see nearly a
doubling of oil use by 2030, and a 37 jump in gas.
Coal
is a big loser in all the scenarios.
The
US delegation—the first since Donald Trump took office to work on
an IPCC report—did not throw a monkey wrench into the process, as
many here had feared.
"The
United States is quite constructive, though I don't think they want
that said out loud," said on delegate who asked not to be named.
Besides
special reports, the IPCC has issued five major Assessment Reports
that serve as the scientific foundation for UN climate talk. The next
one is due in 2022.
I
must say I am indebted to Hal Turner for the work he is doing in

War Developments Overnight; Syria Situation Going "Critical"
Serious
developments have taken place overnight concerning the ongoing
situation in Syria. ALL of my former colleagues in the
Intelligence Community tell me the United States, the United Kingdom,
and France have placed their Middle East military units on ALERT for
what most believe will be a SUSTAINED US/UK/France direct attack
against Syria commencing as early as tonight! This
article will be LIVE UPDATED throughout today (Tuesday, 10 April
2018).
British
Air Force units on Cyprus are openly being loaded with bombs,
missiles and ammunition. The Russian Baltic Fleet has declared
a Combat
Alert.
Russian strategic bombers are in the air over the Mediterranean Sea,
loaded with air-to-ship cruise
missiles and the Russian Air Force is conducting heavy Combat Air
Patrols throughout the region.
This
situation is like a huge pile of dynamite waiting for a spark to
explode into direct war between Russia, the US/NATO and regional
powers in the Middle East.
Russia,
the only nation with permission from the Syrian government to be in
that country, has told the US/UK & France they will NOT ALLOW
another attack upon their ally, Syria. Russia
has made clear that it will counter-attack; shooting down any
missiles launched at Syria, shooting down any aircraft attacking
Syria, then further attacking any Navy ship which launched such
missiles and air bases from which attacking planes were launched!
The
US/UK/France claim that a Chemical Weapons attack was perpetrated 4
days ago against innocent civilians in a suburb of Damascus called
east Ghouta. The attack ALLEGEDLY involved Chlorine Gas and
possibly a Nerve Agent.
Reports
vary, saying between 40 and 161 civilians were KILLED and upwards of
1,000 others injured.
The
US/UK/France blame this "attack" upon the Syrian
Government, but evidence from the area shows Chlorine Cylinders
manufactured by MERCK, at their Schudgardt, Germany facility. That
means the Chlorine was supplied by Germany, a NATO country.

MERCK
has thus far FAILED to respond to my media inquiries which cited a
serial number on one of those Chlorine Cylinders. I
contacted MERCK in Germany seeking answers to who bought that
cylinder, when, to whom was that cylinder shipped, where and when?
MERCK in Germany failed to respond.
I
then called MERCK World Headquarters which is located in my home
state of New Jersey. Julie Ann from MERCK's National Call
Center told me she was unable to get anyone from their Global
Communications Group to answer my inquiry and they would get back in
touch with me. No such return call was received from MERCK.
What is MERCK hiding?
Clearly,
the chemical/Pharmaceutical giant has records on who they sold the
Chlorine Gas to, when it was sold, and to whom it was shipped; why
won't MERCK provide the information now that the company knows its
product was used in a mass-murder
chemical weapons attack?
Who is MERCK protecting by failing to reveal the information?
Stockholders
in MERCK may wish to ask themselves if they wish to continue holding
stock in a corporation that conceals information involving a CRIME
AGAINST HUMANITY? And
now that this information is out here in public, other MERCK
stockholders may wish to get out of MERCK before any potential
avalanche of people decide they should cut-and-run from that company
stock.
WAR
PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY
During
the night, military units in Syria from the Syrian Arab Army,
Iranian-backed Hezbollah, and Russia were ordered to begin DISPERSING
from several bases, in anticipation of a US/UK/France military
attack.
Russian
Air Force has sortied at least two Early Warning Planes (A-50s)
over Eastern and Western Syria, each one is guarded by two Russian
Air Force (RuAF) fighter jets.
British
military in Cyprus has been put on alert for military action in Syria
with ‘remarkable’ activity being reported.
Russian
Black Sea Fleet has declared a high level combat alert for all
vessels as US-led trans-national strike force with UK and France
poised to strike Syria over chemical weapons allegations. Attack is
expected in the next 24 hours.
RuAF
is highly active over Syria with multiple planes airborne near its
coast, a U.S. P-8 POSEIDON anti-submarine aircraft was just monitored
collecting signal and electronic intelligence off the coast of Syria
and is now currently just off Lebanon
Russian
strategic bombers are airborne over the Caspian sea and over Iran,
fully loaded with Kh-55SM extend range to 3000 km cruise missiles.
These missiles are air-to-ship and they are known to be incredibly
precise ship-killers.
US
Warships are reportedly converging in the Mediterranean, with the
Pentagon already admitting the USS Donald Cook is on-station near
Syria.
Surface
vessels of the Chinese Navy in the Mediterranean in joint exercises
with surface units of the Russian navy have been ordered to join the
Russians at the Syrian port of Tartus in case of a possible

this activity is taking place, yet the mass-media in the United
States and Europe is virtually silent about it. Few if any
stories are being reported as to the magnitude of what's taking

to send independent chemical weapons investigators to #Syria's Douma
in what is hailed as a diplomatic breakthrough, hoping to prevent a
#US-led strike on Syria. #Russia has backed the inspection.
The
international chemical weapons watchdog will send a fact-finding
mission to Douma, Syria, to investigate the reports of an attack
there. The move follows calls from Moscow and Damascus to launch an
international investigation.
“Today,
the OPCW Technical Secretariat has requested the Syrian Arab Republic
to make the necessary arrangements for such a deployment. This has
coincided with a request from the Syrian Arab Republic and the
Russian Federation to investigate the allegations of chemical weapons
use in Douma. The team is preparing to deploy to Syria shortly,” the
Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said in a
statement on Tuesday.
The
incident allegedly occurred in the Damascus suburb of Douma on
Saturday. It was reported by several rebel-linked activist groups,
including the controversial White Helmets, who accused the Syrian
troops of dropping chlorine-filled munitions on the area. They also
claimed it affected dozens of civilians, and footage of children
being allegedly treated for poisoning has appeared online.
Damascus
has called the alleged attack a “fabrication.” Russian
military specialists have explored the area as Jaysh al-Islam
militants occupying Douma began to evacuate from the city as part of
a Russian-brokered deal with Damascus. Moscow said the specialists
had found no traces of chemical weapons or any victims treated for
chemical poisoning.
The
OPCW’s announcement came shortly before an expected UN Security
Council meeting on the alleged Douma incident. Both Russia and the US
are expected to roll out draft resolutions calling for an
international investigation into the purported attack. On Monday, the
UN said it was unable to “independently
verify the allegations” regarding
Douma.
“We're
not in a position at this point to independently verify the
allegations but, obviously, any allegation of continued use of
chemical weapons is extremely, extremely troubling,” Stephane

Jordan from Saudi Arabian airspace. Provides logistics for jet
fighters which are expected to launch cruise missiles towards Syria
very soon as part of US-led transnational attack on Syria.

Syria
is 7 hours ahead of the US east coast. So as of this update it
is 5:01 AM there. Sunrise is at 6:10 AM. So unless
something takes place within the next hour, I'd say "doom off"
for now.
The
US does not (generally) launch big attacks in daylight because cruise
missiles travel slow enough to be shot at by ground forces that are
able to see them, and so the US (usually) strikes in the darkest
hours of the night.
Perhaps
this is a strategy; keep the target worried about what they "know"
is coming. Increase the stress level. Drag it out. Make
them tired. When people are tired, they don't function well.
That's an advantage.
Either
way, I have been awake since about 4:30 this morning and I'm totally
bushed. At 11:00 my time, if nothing takes place, I will cease
these live updates on this article.
