Increasing areas of open water in the Arctic

Things are not looking good in the Arctic as we see more areas of open water where, in previous years, there have been none.

Arctic sea ice update - 08/13/2018

Here is the latest report from Margo.

She may be untrained but she is looking at the data every day and noticing changes that seem to be eluding everyone else.

Here is some of what she has noticed.

There is a lot of cloud around today so she has used data from the 12th August.

The areas just north of Greenland is continuing to open up where this has previously been thick, multi-year ice.

As in last year....

Here is a comparison with 2017....

And with 2012 which set the record for low sea ice extent

This is some of the area that is breaking up at 77 degrees North in the Beaufort Sea.

On the edge of the cloud you can discern an area of open sea at 85 degrees North, also north of Greenland

This shows that, apart from an area in the Beaufort Sea everywhere, including the Pole, is seeing air temperatures at above zero.

These are the air temperature anomalies for today
