Open water on Beaufort, Chukchi, East Siberian, Laptev, Kara and Barents Seas

This is during the dark of the Arctic winter!

Open water in the Arctic - 01/01/2016

Harold Hensel, via Facebook

Beaufort, Chukchi, East Siberian, Laptev, Kara and Barents Sea's have open water. 01-01-2016.

The white is Climate Reanalyzier's, version of sea ice extent.

Broken up ice and slush is included in extent images if the designated areas have 15% or more of ice in them.

The 2nd image is what the sea ice actually looks like. It has cloud interference but the broken up ice can be seen.

The third image is actual temperature anomalies from the 1979 to 2000 baseline.

Above freezing temperatures in the Arctic Ocean in Jan, with no sunlight, is concerning. Permafrost areas in Canada don't look very good either

Sea Surface Temperature 01 02 2016

Notice the brighter purple color on the right hand side of Greenland coming from the south and going north. This is warmer gulf stream water. It is going into the Arctic Ocean.

  1. Your sea surface temperature map above looks nothing like what is shown at Climate Reanalyzer

  2. I copied the addy and saw the temp anomaly same as above. 36*F hotter than normal over the ice cap and a huge swath of Canada.

  3. Robin - you are posting images of what Googe Earth has loaded from Climate Reanalyzer that are for some time in the summer. The layers being loaded into Google Earth are not for the dates that show up on your Google Earth images. You should post a correction both here and on Facebook. People are sharing the erroneous images and thus focusing on something other than the real issues in the Arctic.

    2. Thanks. Things are very bad in the Arctic but current ice extent is not as bad as the image shows. Climate Reanalyzer needs to fix their Google Earth download link.
