White Island erupts

White Island erupted on Tuesday morning.

GNS Science said it was a small eruption, which appears to be over. Steam appears to be rising about 2km.

The agency said the last major eruption was in August last year, which was similar in strength.

The eruption started at 10.23am and lasted about 10 minutes.

GNS has increased its volcanic alert level for White Island by one step. And the colour code for the aviation industry has been raised from green to red.
