Israeli sabre-rattling

Barak: Israel never promised not to attack Iran
Israel says it does not rule out launching a military offensive against Iran, saying it has never offered any relevant promises.

Israeli Minister of Military Affairs Ehud Barak said on Tuesday that Tel Aviv has never promised the United States it would hold off from attacking Iran.

"We are not committing to anything," he said.

Barak also dismissed the negotiations between the Islamic Republic and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- the US, Britain, France, China, and Russia -- plus Germany (the P5+1 group), as a waste of time.

Iran and the P5+1 group wrapped up their latest negotiations in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday and agreed to hold the next round of talks in Baghdad on May 23, 2012. Both sides hailed the talks as successful and constructive.

The two sides had previously held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010 and another in Istanbul in January 2011.

Barak’s comments came while Washington -- Tel Aviv’s strongest ally -- has referred to any potential military action as a last resort if all other measures fail.

The Israeli minister is due to meet with the US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in Washington on Thursday.
