Alarming electricity shortages in Pakistan

Loadshedding likely to break all records
ISLAMABAD - Despite all claimed of government, power shortfall has reached the alarming figure of 5,000 megawatt with its nose up and seems to break all previous records this year

It is worth mentioning here that in April generally it doesn’t happen and power crisis start worsening from May with the arrival of heat waves in air but this year the situation is worsening much earlier.

Many areas in the country are facing around 18 hours power outages and major cities are facing around 12 hours loadshedding. Technically 5,000 megawatt shortfall means 7-8 hours loadshedding across the country but due to industrial factor, the households have to live in dark for long. Ironically there is no hope of relief given by the government as in just 4 years it came to know that previous policies were wrong and actual solution to the energy issues was cheaper energy instead of rentals or other thermal energy sources.

Though government is increasing price of electricity every day but still it is unable to pay Independent Power Producers their dues to maintain maximum power generation. As per sources, the energy mix in Pakistan has reached the dangerous limit of 25 per cent hydel and 75 per cent thermal that this small economy cannot take burden of in any circumstances. As per present situation there is a demand for electricity of around 16,000 MW against the generation of near to 11,000 MW. Hydel share is just 2,800 megawatt and around 5,900 MW is being added by the Independent Power Producers whereas public sector thermal units are generating around 1,700 MW.

There are only two solutions available to fight with this menace of loadshedding. One is energy conservation and secondly generation of cheaper electricity using water resources of the country, experts believe.
