There are also national protests scheduled in Scotland against fuel prices. It's too bad. People should be protesting government policy on growth and energy rather than a surtax.

Nationwide protest against oil prices set

10 March, 2012

SEVEN leftist party-list groups will spearhead nationwide protests and a campaign to gather a million signatures against the rising fuel prices to pressure the Aquino administration to remove the value-added tax on oil products, Anakpawis Rep. Rafael Mariano said Friday.

The signature campaign will begin on March 12 and will be followed by rallies in urban centers nationwide, Mariano said.

He said activists would be deployed in all MRT and LRT train stations, bus terminals, public markets and malls in Metro Manila to gather the signatures to prove to President Benigno Aquino III that the people were fed up with the government’s inaction on high prices.

“President Benigno Simeon Aquino III must act decisively to stop the weekly oil price hikes. For once, the President must show some political will and curb the profiteering of oil companies,” Mariano said.

“The new oil price increases which took effect on Thursday raised the price of regular gasoline by P0.85 a liter, premium gasoline by P0.30, unleaded gasoline by P0.60, diesel by P0.20, and kerosene by P0.30,” said the Concerned Drivers and Operators for Reform and the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide.

Oil prices have increased nine times since January. An 11-kilogram tank of cooking gas now costs almost P1,000.
