Magnitude 7.6 quake rocks Mexico

21 March, 2012]

The quake shook buildings in Mexico City, according to a witness.

Swaying buildings in the capital sent frightened workers and residents into the streets.

The quake was 17.5 kilometres under the earth's surface, USGS said.

No destructive widespread tsunami had been generated.

However, there was a possibility of some local tsunamis.

Cell phone lines were down and traffic snarled in the capital moments after the quake. No damage was reported in Oaxaca, near where the quake hit, according to local television.

Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard's Twitter account said the water system and other "strategic services" were not experiencing problems.

"I have problems with pressure, I felt I was going to faint," said Rosa Maria Lopez Velazquez, 62, outside a mall in Mexico City.

The quake was initially reported at magnitude 7.9.
