Ron Paul wins South Carolina debate Twitter poll

17 January, 2012

Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, won a South Carolina debate Twitter poll Monday night. The South Carolina debate, hosted by Fox News, featured the remaining five Republican candidates in a last minute showdown to unseat former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in the Palmetto State.

Fox News’ Twitter poll allowed Twitters users to decide whether a candidate had answered or dodged questions at the South Carolina debate. Twitter users were able to participate by using the hash tags #Dodge or #Answer.

According to the results of the Twitter poll, Mr. Paul bested his competition in every category, including personal record, economy, race, foreign policy and social issues.

As he summarized the results for questions on the economy, the Fox News reporter John Roberts acknowledged Mr. Paul’s strong finish. “Ron Paul way above the line,” Mr. Roberts said. However, Mr. Roberts downplayed the results in his next sentence. “Ron Paul always tends to do well in these Twitter surveys, they are not scientific they are people voting for their candidate sometimes and other times they are a good measure of what is being said,” Mr. Roberts added.

The Fox News reporter also diminished Mr. Paul’s victory for questions on foreign policy. Although Mr. Paul won the category, the Fox News reporter said that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich did “very very well on foreign policy” and that the Texas congressman “also did well in foreign policy.”

Although Mr. Paul is in a heated struggle with Mr. Santorum to grab a top-tier finish in South Carolina, the Texas congressman is very popular on Twitter. Citing data from Crimson Hexagon, TechCrunch recently reported that Mr. Paul is not only the most talked about candidate on Twitter, but that the former Air Force surgeon is the most positively talked about candidate on the social network.
