Iraq statement results in head-shaking, silence

Since boldly proclaiming during Saturday night’s debate that he would “send troops back into Iraq,” Gov. Rick Perry’s statement has largely been met with derision and consternation in online forums and blogs, and — in what is perhaps a sign of his sagging relevance — silence from the nation’s leading military publications.

Fellow conservatives did not exactly line up behind the governor, with John McCain, who had opposed removing all U.S. troops from Iraq, telling CNN: “The moment and window of opportunity [to keep troops in Iraq] has now been closed.” The network also noted that a recent CNN poll found that 78 percent of Americans favor removing all combat troops from the country.
