EU agrees oil embargo as Syrians march against Assad

The Middle East once again is the single most active faultline on the planet, with Syria at the centre.


It is looking like becoming the latest locus for a tug-of-war between East and West.  As the struggle for oil resources between Russia and China on the one hand, and the West on the other intensifies,. so too does enmity on the part of the Arab street against nuclear-armed Israel.


I would be looking at what role Russia is going to be playing - don't expect them to simply support the United States and NATO.


It is looking increasinggly volatile - and dangerous.

(Reuters) - The European Union decided to impose sanctions on Syrian oil exports on Friday, saying President Bashar al-Assad was massacring his own countrymen.

"The sanctions have been agreed," an official said in the Polish resort of Sopot where EU foreign ministers met to set out their response to Assad's military crackdown on five months of protests against his 11-year rule.
